Nic Batum, Kelly Oubre Jr., Kyle Lowry Expected To Return To Sixers

Jun 2, 2024 2:51 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to bring back Nic Batum, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Kyle Lowry next season, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Sixers, who are reportedly looking to add a max player to the roster, could have up to $65 million in free agency.

Batum, Oubre, and Lowry each mesh well with Joel Embiid and could return for a smaller salary.

Oubre may have played himself into a mid-level exception worth $8 million, according to league sources.

Sixers, Two Other Teams Interested In Acquiring, Extending Jimmy Butler

May 29, 2024 3:15 PM

Jimmy Butler has at least three teams willing to trade for him this offseason with the intent of then signing him to a max-level extension, sources tell Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald

Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported earlier this week that the Sixers have interest in trading for and then extending Butler.

The two-year max extension that Butler and his camp will push for this offseason includes salaries of $54.3 million for the 25-26 season and $58.6 million for 26-27.

Butler would be eligible to sign the same two-year, $113 million extension that he can sign with the Heat with any team he’s traded to because his Bird Rights carry over in a trade, but that deal could not be agreed upon for six months.

Butler would ideally like to finish his career with the Heat, but he also is seeking the extension.

Sixers Prepared To Offer Jimmy Butler Max Extension If They Acquire Him From Heat

May 28, 2024 9:44 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers are prepared to offer Jimmy Butler a max contract extension this offseason if they acquire him via trade from the Miami Heat, sources tell Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Butler has $48.8 million guaranteed for next season and a player option for $52.2 million for the 2025-26 season. Butler would like a two-year max extension worth $113 million. Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald followed up Pompey's report by indicating that "whether it's from the Heat or another team, [Butler] wants a max extension."

While Butler has said he wants to remain with the Heat, there is believed to be some level of reluctance to extend him this offseason.

The Sixers could offer future draft capital and cap relief to the Heat as they have enough cap space to absorb his contract without sending back anything in return.

Philadelphia would prefer to sign Paul George, but Butler is a secondary option.

Sixers Internally View Offseason Possibilities As Similar To When Warriors Signed Kevin Durant In 2016

May 23, 2024 1:30 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers internally are viewing their offseason with upwards of $60 million in cap space as a highly unique situation similar to when the Golden State Warriors had enough cap space to add Kevin Durant to their 73-win roster, sources tell Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. Throughout his tenure in the NBA, Daryl Morey has steadfastly believed that teams need multiple superstars in order to truly contend for a title.

The Sixers can add a max contract player to their core of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Maxey will be a restricted free agent on a discounted cap hold.

It is rare for teams to be have that amount of flexibility to add a third max player to an MVP and a young player about to hit his first max contract. The Sixers are willing to spend future money and sacrifice draft capital this offseason to improve their roster.

Paul George appears to be the best player who will possibly hit the open market as he and the Los Angeles Clippers have been unable to agree to an extension.

The Warriors, however, were able to add Durant to a roster that also included Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala.

Tyrese Maxey Wins 23-24 NBA Sportsmanship Award

May 16, 2024 1:07 PM

Tyrese Maxey has been awarded the Joe Dumars Trophy as the winner of the 2023-24 NBA Sportsmanship Award. Maxey becomes the second player in franchise history to receive the honor, joining Eric Snow in 1999-00.

The annual award is designed to honor a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court. Each NBA team nominated one of its players for the NBA Sportsmanship Award. From the list of 30 team nominees, a panel of league executives selected one finalist from each of the NBA’s six divisions, and current NBA players selected the winner.

Maxey concluded his fourth NBA campaign in 2023-24 as a top-11 scorer in the league, averaging career highs in points (25.9), assists (6.2), and steals (1.0). He was selected as a first-time NBA All-Star on Feb. 1 and later became the second player in franchise history to be named the league’s Most Improved Player (Dana Barros in 1994-95).

Maxey averaged just 1.7 turnovers this season, joining Dallas’ Kyrie Irving (also 2023-24) as the only two players in league history to average at least 25.0 points and 5.0 assists with fewer than 2.0 turnovers for a full campaign.

Daryl Morey: Sixers Will Have Lots Of Changes Beyond Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Nick Nurse

May 6, 2024 4:01 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers plan to have a significantly different roster next season as they enter the 2024 offseason with approximately $65 million in cap space. Beyond Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Nick Nurse, there could be many new faces with the Sixers.

"We're not going to have continuity," Morey said Monday at the 76ers' headquarters in New Jersey. "We'll have continuity with our stars and our head coach but we're going to have a lot of changes this season."

The Sixers won at a 65-win pace with Embiid, but went 16-27 without him.

"I feel like I could have done a better job with the players so that we were in a better spot to win without him," Morey said. "That said, we do spend 90% of the time figuring out how to win the title with him. It can't be a big focus, how we play without him. We know that team can't win a championship. It's really, how do we manage through it better? I felt like, on me, the depth wasn't quite there when he was out to win at the level we wanted to win at."

Rival Teams Think Sixers Could Trade For Jimmy Butler

May 5, 2024 5:27 PM

Jimmy Butler reportedly wants an extension from the Miami Heat this offseason. Butler has two years remaining on his current deal, including a player option for 2025-26. It's unknown where the Heat stand on adding even more guaranteed money to their payroll moving forward. Butler will turn 35 years old ahead of next season and missed the Heat's first-round series loss to the Boston Celtics due to a knee injury.

If the Heat balk at extending Butler, rival teams believe the Philadelphia 76ers could attempt to swing a trade for the veteran wing. The Sixers project to have more than $60 million in cap space this summer. Daryl Morey will be seeking to fill out the roster around Joel Embiid and re-sign Tyrese Maxey.

Butler previously played for part of one season with the 76ers. Philadelphia acquired Butler from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the end of the 2018-19 season, Butler was acquired by the Heat in a sign-and-trade deal with the Sixers.

Magic, Sixers Known To Have Interest In Signing Paul George

May 4, 2024 8:52 AM

Paul George is widely expected to decline his $48.8 million player option for next season with the LA Clippers. After LA signed Kawhi Leonard to an extension, it was thought that George and the Clippers would agree to an extension. However, that hasn't happened, and George now appears poised to enter free agency this summer.

Two teams with known interest in George are the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers. Both teams have the ability to create the necessary cap space to sign the veteran wing to a deal worth up to his projected max salary of just over $49 million dollars for 2024-25.

George has continued to express he'd like to re-sign with LA. The Clippers have reportedly not offered him a max deal, and that's held things up. LA hopes that George, like Leonard did, will take less than the maximum to allow the team to dip below the second apron. That would free up the Clippers to make more roster moves to add talent around their stars.

Sixers Could Pursue Paul George, Jimmy Butler, Brandon Ingram

May 3, 2024 1:23 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers have long been connected to a pursuit of Paul George this offseason.

"The player at the top of theeir list is Paul George," said Brian Windhorst on Get Up on Friday morning. "His contract extension discussions with the Clippers have not led to an agreement. The Clippers are fighting for their playoff lives tonight in Dallas. They have not wanted to offer the max contract. They got Kawhi to accept an extension at less than a max, that has been the standard.

"I think Philly is going to come out with a max offer to Paul George. The Clippers are going to have to decide max or not. Paul George is going to have to decide 'Do I want to stay here or not?'

"But you don't just to have use cap space on free agents. You can use it in trade. This is where I think Daryl Morey is going to go to work. There's going to be a number of names who are going to come up, but I'm going to give you two off the bat here. Both involve who can get extensions with their teams, but for various reasons will not.

"The first name to watch is Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat. He has two years left on his contract. There is interest in him extending... If Jimmy Butler wants to extend and the Heat are not willing to do it facing heavy luxury tax penalties, is there a way to revisit that?

"Also, another player to watch is Brandon Ingram. He had a very poor playoff session for the Pelicans. He is due a contact extension. The Pelicans have never paid the tax in the history of their franchise. They are set to sign Trey Murphy as a big dollar player alongside Zion Williamson. This is a player who might be on the market and again, I don't think even their No. 1 choice behind Paul George, but this type of player is who Philly can potentially look at to add firepower and offense to this team.
