Kristaps Porzingis Had Bigger Contract Opportunity With Jazz During 2023 Offseason

Jun 3, 2024 11:40 AM

Last offseason, Kristaps Porzingis was traded by the Washington Wizards to the Boston Celtics where he picked up his $36 million player option and then signed a two-year, $60 million extension.

If Porzingis would have become a free agent, sources tell Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports that he was positioned to receive a richer contract from the Utah Jazz.

Porzingis would have joined a versatile frontcourt partner in Lauri Markkanen.

Porzingis instead joined the Celtics and is in The Finals where he is a floor spacer and post option while also protecting the rim on the other end of the floor.

The Washington Wizards have named Brian Keefe as head coach.

Keefe becomes the 26th head coach in the organization’s history.

Alex Sarr, Zaccharie Risacher Emerge As Probable Top-2 Picks In 2024 NBA Draft

May 22, 2024 2:21 PM

While the top of the 2024 NBA draft remains fluid, there is a growing belief among rival teams that Alex Sarr and Zaccharie Risacher have emerged as the probable top-2 selections in some order by the Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards.

"Many around the league expect the Hawks to select Sarr with the top pick, as there are compelling reasons to consider him the best prospect in this class with his elite physical tools, mobility, defensive versatility, finishing ability and potential as a perimeter shooter," writes Jonathan Givony in his post-combine mock draft.

Sarr could fit alongside Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu in the frontcourt as the Hawks are expected to largely remake the rest of their roster.

The Wizards at No. 2 are expected to select Sarr if he is not selected at No. 1, or Risacher.

Brian Keefe Considered Frontrunner As Wizards Begin Coaching Interviews

May 10, 2024 9:51 AM

The Washington Wizards are expected to begin interviews for their next head coach later this week or early next week. Rival teams believe that interim head coach Brian Keefe is the frontrunner for the job.

Keefe took over at midseason, after Wes Unseld Jr. was fired by Washington. Keefe went 8-31 in 39 games in his first head coaching opportunity. Keefe had been an NBA assistant for 14 years with the Wizards, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets.

Other candidates for the Wizards opening could include Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn, Houston Rockets assistant Royal Ivey and Dallas Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney.

Tyus Jones Hopes To Stay With Wizards, Wants To Start

Apr 16, 2024 9:08 AM

Washington Wizards point guard Tyus Jones will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He hopes to stay with the Wizards, but Jones always wants to be a starter next season.

"Anything can happen," Jones said, "but [my family and I] love D.C., we want to be here, and I want to help this team continue to build and move in the right direction."

Jones was a fulltime starter for the first time this season, by opening all 66 games he played. That's important to Jones moving forward.

"The plan is to be a starter,” Jones said when asked about his preferred role next season."

Jones averaged a career-high in points and assists last season at 12 points and 7.3 assists per game. He also shot 48.9% from the field, including 41.4% on three-pointers.
